Subject: Happy Feast Dear Acha

Email communications between Joseph Palackal, CMI and REJAN PATHIL

Dear loving Joseph Palackal Acha,

I extend my warmest wishes for a joyful feast. May the intercession of Saint Joseph support all your efforts for our Church.

It brings me great pleasure to see the Aramaic Project continually enriched by new and valuable resources. Your dedication to this Encyclopedic initiative can't go without being appreciated. I trust that this comprehensive work will secure its place in the annals of world music history.

I am nearing the completion of my dissertation and would like to ask for your prayers. Your videos served as the primary foundation for my research and significantly aided me in reaching this milestone. I am truly grateful for all your help.

I extend my heartfelt wishes for your success in all your upcoming endeavors that seek to enrich the Syro-Malabar Church and, in turn, contribute to the inestimable, venerable musical heritage of the Universal Church.

With continued prayers,
lovingly,
Fr. Joseph Pathil

Subject: Grattitude

Email communications between Joseph Palackal, CMI and Lucas Mathew

Good evening Father,

I hope this email finds you well.

The reason I am writing this email is to thank you for all the hard work you've done with the Aramaic Project, and striving to preserve and promote rich traditions of the Faith, particularly with the Syro-Malabar Qurbana.

Some context. My name is Lucas Mathew and I live in Tampa, Florida. My parents are from Kottayam and settled in Tampa 25 years ago. We have a Knanaya church here (Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church) where my parents go, while my fiance and I attend another Parish that celebrates the Mass in the Extraordinary Form (Tridentine Mass).

In the last 1.5 years, I took a great interest in learning liturgical traditions and the rich history of the Catholic Church (both East and West). This all began as I began reading and trying to understand the Mass. I was asking my parents questions on what the Qurbana was like when they were little kids. Some things I learned were that the Qurbana was not in Malayalam, the priest was facing ad orientem primarily, Priests would hear confessions leading up to Mass, communion at the communion rail, etc. What a discovery!

As I was reading and researching more and more about the Latin (Roman) rite and the Syro-Malabar church, I eventually stumbled upon Christian Musicological Society of India. I read and watched several discussions and videos that your project created, and I was amazed to learn the rich history of Christianity within Kerala.

The more I read about Church history, and as some would say "the deposit of faith", I felt the need to thank you for taking such great effort to preserve the rich history of the past while promoting rich traditions. I think your work is truly valuable, especially in the current day.

I hope that all people may discover the profound beauty of the Catholic Church.

Subject: Aramaic Project

Email communications between Joseph Palackal, CMI and Deric Antony Balan-Mushariet

Hello Father Palackal,

I had come across the project of Aramaic Music of India a year or so ago. There are not many things that necessarily changes someone’s life, but this project you are doing is one.

- Like you I am also a Nazrani Khristhiani.

- Like you from Kerala and an immigrant somewhat new to the West. ( Living in Houston, Texas)

- However perhaps unlike you,  I was misunderstood by my Christian Brothers and sisters at work and local community- as a Muslim because of my appearance (bearded Middle Eastern features)

And, when I used to say I was from India I would be automatically assumed to be an idol worshipper or vegetarian or that sort of biased understanding, without further opportunity to clarify.

Your work and what it did was helped me  gain a True Identity that I did not know existed previously, and to perhaps many more Nazarani men, women and youngsters living in the Western Christian world.

Your tireless work is very relevant because my family did not teach me much anything about it nor did our Roopatha achanmar who perhaps did not put much efforts into that.

Now I can say without confusion about my primary identity that I come from one of the oldest Christian Civilizations in the world and my forefathers used the same language that Jesus spoke.

Not with pride, but humility and responsibility that I & we have to be worthy of the Lord and HIS Good News because of this important fact.

With much affection

Subject: The languages of sign on the top of Jesus's Cross

Email communications between Joseph Palackal, CMI and Dr. Zacharias Thundy on the languages of sign on the top of Jesus's Cross

Why was the writing above the Cross only in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek? Why not Aramaic? Was it only a colloquial language with no script?

Good question.  Actually, The Gospel writers do not distinguish Aramaic from Hebrew at all.  All th

so-called Hebrew words recorded in the Gospels are Aramaic words.  Yes, you can write Aramaic with Hebrew letters because all the letters are the same.  The best evidence is the word NAZRAYA found in John John 19:20, though professedly written in Hebrew.  If it were the Hebrew word, it should be NOZRI.  It is like our writing a sanskrit word in different scripts.

Also, note well that it is the Greek writers of the gospels that use the word "Hebrew."  They don't distinguish between Hebrew and Aramaic.  It is like people asking us whether we speak Indian rather than Hindi, Tamil, and so on.

Subject: Future of Raza Qurbana in the near future!

Dear Fr. Joseph,

I hope you are doing well! I write to you with so much appreciation and gratefulness for the hard work that you have put into preserving our very own Syriac chants and prayers. Ever since high school, when I came to the knowledge of the roots of our Church, I have been so fascinated by the Syriac language. This consequently resulted in trying to find as many resources online to learn more Syriac and our liturgy and practices.
In Aramaic Project-71, in the interview with Fr. Varghese Mattathil, a recording of the Raza celebrated in Syriac by Fr. George Plathottam was briefly mentioned. Would you by any chance know where I can find a copy of this recording? I have been so eager to hear the Raza in Syriac.
Out of curiosity, I wish to ask: Do you think that in the near future we can see the Raza being celebrated again in our Syriac language? Just like Qurbanas are being celebrated once in a while in Syriac.

Remember me in Your prayers Acha,

In Christ,
Joel Sanil

Dear Fr Palackal,

Thank you for your response. I tried proquest but it offers only a preview of 24 pages. I am right now in Delhi. Therefore, once I get back home, I will collect it. I have been following the activities of CMS for a while now and I really adore them as well.

I have quite a few ideas to work on and I am yet to settle on one. Initially, I was focusing on the folk Christian music of the Latin Christians and its evolution. But lately, I found liturgical music, and its vernacularization quite interesting. Also how music and chanting traditions were used as mediums of contestation between various sects of Kerela Christianity appears quite appealing to me. Therefore, as of now, I am focused on reading secondary works, so that I can find the aptest topic.

Also, I would like to request any book suggestions on the theoretical aspects of music in Christianity.

Regards,

Lija

Subject - Interview for Sacred Music Class

This is Maritta from the Propria team. Hope you are in good spirits, it has been a while since we last met for the musical discussion on the Propria. I am currently finishing up my Masters in Theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary. My class this semester is on Sacred Music. As part of my final paper, I have to write about a composer of sacred music. I was wondering if could write about you. I already got approval from my professor to interview you. May I please interview you next week at your convenience please father? The earlier the better. I hope it is alright with you. I am estimating the interview time to be less than 1 hr. Can you also re-send the article you sent me a while back and any other writings on music you may have, so that I can refer to them in my final paper. The paper will be brief- about 5 pages, double spaced, and I will email you a copy once it is done. Please let me know,

    Sincerely
    Maritta Martin

I was planning on creating an hour long type audio format podcast series. Beginning with the advent of Christianity in India, establishing it's historicity and that Christianity is not a foreign or a colonial religion that came to India off late, clearing the general misconceptions. The general idea is to connect today's people with the Apostolic roots of our faith, which is very slowly being forgotten in our times. We could go on to talk about the east Syriac tradition, chants, liturgy and other customs and traditions associated with it. Talking in great detail about these topics. I am hoping to know your thoughts on this as well and am open to your suggestions and criticisms.

I was hoping that we could do it within the next 2 weeks. Please update me with your schedule and we can work the dates out.

I was also hoping to have a few conversations prior, just to get to know eachother well and discuss the topics and fine tune the ideas
Thanking you.
Regards

Joseph,

Just a short note to thank you for coming to Washington last week and presenting such an excellent Botkin Lecture. I thought your presentation was perfect – filled with interesting information and nicely geared for a general audience. We also appreciated your agreeing to take part in the interview. It was fascinating to speak with you and your conversation will enrich and inform future archival researchers. It will probably take a few months for ITS, our technical division, to edit and post your talk online, but I will let you know when it goes up.

Again, thank you for coming to Washington – and sorry we missed each other on the train back to NY!

Best wishes Nancy ,

Greetings.

I write these few lines to thank you for your gracious presence and excellent lectures that you offered at DVK for the Denha Endowment Lectures. I could be present only for the first lecture after the inauguration (as I had to go for another meeting of the moral theologians). This lecture which I participated was excellent and insightful. I thank you for the same, especially for the painstaking research that has gone into this work. I am sure that the second one was equally well received. I hope that Fr. Francis Thonippara wlll take the measures to see that your lectures are published. I had to leave for Pune as I was part of the group that went for the Lavasa blessing; so, I could not be present for the afternoon. As usual, everyone was mesmerized by your singing and chanting; and your Excellent English pronunciation and the play with apt idioms also were well received by our audience. To be very frank, I felt proud of having such a great confrere and I thank the Lord and our beloved Congregation for the wonderful gift that you are. Thanking you once again, and wishing you all the best and God's abundant blessings,

Saju

Our Mission

Christian Musicological Society of India is an international forum for interdisciplinary research, discussion, and dissemination of knowledge, on the music, art and dance of about thirty million Christians in India, who belong to a diverse set of communities and linguistic groups and follow a variety of liturgical traditions some of which date back to the early Christian era. Founded in 1999 by Dr. Joseph J. Palackal CMI, the Society hopes that such researches will draw attention to the lesser known aspects of India in connection with the rest of the world.
