Fr. Emmanuel Thelly was a well known Aramaic scholar and key contributor to liturgical prayers and hymns. Many of the transalted hymns used in Syro-Malabar official prayers were his contribution. He was a lecturer in Syriac at Devagiri and Mannanam Colleges, and taught the seminarians for many years. He lived and worked at Mutholy, Koodathai, Pala, and Kappad ashrams. A few research articles, books, etc, were published by him. For three years he taught Syriac and served as a missionary in Iraq(1964-1967) and he also did pastoral work in the diocese of Brooklyn(USA). Avid reader and lifelong learner, Fr.Emmanuel led a very simple life of hard work and prayer. He loved the routines and the timetable in the religious houses, and was enthusiastic in priestly ministries. Loving and compassionate, he used to visit the sick and was affectionate to all. At the time of death in 2015, he was a member of Poonjar monastery, and was buried there.- CMI OBITUARY 1831-2019
