Notes

The uniqueness of this video is in the celebrant: Fr. Thomas Urumbithadathil, who celebrated a solemn Qurbana in Syriac merely six months after his priestly ordination. Fr. Thomas prepared for this celebration with great zeal and enthusiasm. He was assisted and encouraged by Fr. Vardhese Mattathil and Fr. Paul Maniyatt. Fr. Thomas leaves an excellent example for future priests in the Syro Malabar Church to follow. He shows that priests with a singing talent can learn enough Syriac to celebrate a Qurbana if there is a will. By being a role model, Fr. Thomas gives us hope that the Syriac tradition shall survive in the Syro Malabar Church. We thank Fr. Varghese Mattathil for sharing this video with our channel and Fr. Thomas for granting permission to add it to our Marggam Library.

Our Mission

Christian Musicological Society of India is an international forum for interdisciplinary research, discussion, and dissemination of knowledge, on the music, art and dance of about thirty million Christians in India, who belong to a diverse set of communities and linguistic groups and follow a variety of liturgical traditions some of which date back to the early Christian era. Founded in 1999 by Dr. Joseph J. Palackal CMI, the Society hopes that such researches will draw attention to the lesser known aspects of India in connection with the rest of the world.
